Maui Pro Tips: A Local’s Guide to Exploring Maui

There’s the Maui you find on a map. And then there’s the Maui you get to know by living here.

For more than 30 years, Maui has been our home. We’ve watched countless sunrises, packed more beach days than we could ever count, driven these roads in every kind of weather, found favorite places tucked away from the crowds, and learned that sometimes the smallest bit of local knowledge can completely change your day.

Maui Pro Tips is where we share it.

Not a checklist of things you have to do. Not another generic travel guide. Just helpful advice, favorite places, and lessons gathered from decades of life on the island.

A Little Local Knowledge Goes a Long Way

Maui has a way of inviting you to explore.

One road leads to a beach you didn’t know was there. A morning drive turns into an afternoon adventure. You stop somewhere for ten minutes and end up staying for two hours.

But knowing a few things before you go can make all the difference.

What time should you get there? What should you bring? Is there shade? Is it a good place for kids? Where can you stop along the way? What should you pack for lunch? Is it worth getting up early?

Those are the kinds of questions we want to answer.

We'll take you around Kihei, Wailea, Makena, Upcountry, the North Shore, Hana and beyond, sharing the places we love and the practical details we wish every visitor knew.

Beaches. Hikes. Drives. Food. And Everything In Between.

Some days call for an adventure. Others call for finding a shady spot under a tree and doing absolutely nothing.

We think there's room for both.

Here you'll find our favorite beaches, scenic drives, walks and hikes, family-friendly adventures, places to watch the sunset, local businesses worth knowing, rainy-day ideas, hidden corners, and simple ways to experience more of Maui.

We'll tell you when to go, what to bring, what to know before you leave, and what we'd do if we were going ourselves.

And because no Maui adventure is quite as good when you're hungry, we'll talk about food, too.

Pack Something Good

One thing we've learned after 30 years on Maui: don't underestimate the value of having something delicious with you.

Some of the best meals aren't eaten inside a restaurant.

They're eaten barefoot after the beach. At a picnic table under a tree. At the end of a trail. On the side of the road with an incredible view. Or somewhere you never intended to stop in the first place.

That's part of why we make the food we do at Garden Market & Deli.

Fresh sandwiches, colorful salads, tropical smoothies, homemade breads, banana bread, cookies and other favorites are easy to grab before heading out for the day. Our produce comes directly from our Upcountry farm partner, and much of what we serve is made right here by our family.

Stop in, pick up something good, and take it with you.

Take Your Time

If there's one piece of advice we could give anyone visiting Maui, it might be this:

Don't try to see everything.

Leave some space in your day.

Turn down the road that looks interesting. Sit on the beach a little longer. Talk to people. Eat outside. Notice what's growing around you. Watch the light change on the mountains.

Some of the best Maui experiences aren't attractions at all.

They're moments.

And after more than three decades here, those are still the ones we love most.
